*CLOSED* falalalaFABRIC Giveaway from Charm Stitch!

UPDATED: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED! THANKS EVERYONE FOR ENTERING!!!

Today you are the Luckiest of Readers because Charm Stitch is giving away a stack of EIGHT gorgeous fat quarters! WOOT! Keep reading for more details...

Today I'm pleased to introduce you to another fabric-loving friend I met at Weekend Sewing in Vermont. I must confess I actually stalked Laura (the owner of Charm Stitch) online before I left for Vermont and freaked out a little bit because with two weeks to go she had already made a list of things she was going to make and was talking about needing to trace patterns yet. Tracing?! I hadn't even thought about making a list! Once we got to the workshop, Laura kicked it into gear and got started right away on a beautiful Nani Iro double gauze tunic. The woman is a machine, I tell you. It was downright admirable. Here's photographic evidence:

It became immediately evident to me that even if organization or ability to focus were not traits I shared with her, we did share a love of fabric. Laura is a true fabric geek and her shop, Charm Stitch, is a delight to peruse. For instance, you all know I am a hopeless addict of Heather Ross' Far Far Away fabrics and Laura always has a great selection:

and I just about died when I saw these new Yuwa Sweet Grids in her shop the other day. This is the sort of fabric I always buy too little of and end up wishing I had more of, because these go with absolutely everything. They're available as a fat quarter bundle too, ack!

Here are Laura's favorite Yuwas:

So I'm thrilled Laura agreed to join our giveaways this month and share a bundle of her lovely fabric with you!

THE CHARM STITCH STORY
I think one of the reasons I love Charm Stitch so much (besides the awesome fabric) is that it reflects a dream that I can really relate to. Laura writes: "In 2008 I became addicted to sewing. This was the kind of addiction that if you don't find a way to write off your expenses the husband is going to book back-to-back appointments with the accountant and the therapist. Thinking about my preferences, I realized how few shops carried the most enchanting lines and I determined to start my own for very selfish reasons.
little bolero made by Laura with Far Far Away II
One day in her hometown of Baltimore, she found herself walking past an empty shop window and dreaming of a fabric shop inside with a classroom of sewing machines and difficult-to-find Japanese fabrics. In her shop, Laura has carefully curated a lovely selection of eclectic prints with a tendency toward Japanese designs, and although currently she only sells her fabrics online, she's brutally honest about where she wants to be: "In a perfect world, the online shop will take off and I'll find myself with an adorable retail shop leaving trails of thread wherever I go." On her website she tells her customers: "I hope that you will support my endeavor by becoming a patron of the online shop. Every sale gets Charm Stitch one step closer to bringing a superior, modern sewing resource to Baltimore." I'm so excited to see those dreams become a reality. 1. I make them and break them all in a week.

  2. Resolutions...never! But this year I am setting some sewing goals. I don't count them as resolutions because they're really just a list of things I WANT to do, disguised as goals:) beckymac1 at hotmail dot com

  3. I don't make resolutions, I make lists or goals that make me happy. They tend to come to fruition. Could happen any time of year, really....

    ReplyDelete
  4. I like the idea of resolutions but my follow through with is pretty bad. So I try to think up things like to be more patient and happier. I'll probably forget my little ideas some time around February...

    Happy New Year!

  5. I typically don't make resolutions, but usually have at least something in mind for the year when it starts. Normally it's something I'm pretty certain I can accomplish, and usually isn't even too hard. In 2009 my resolution was to get married since we had our date set for April of that year!

  6. Resolutions... great idea, poor execution. At least I'm healthy, organized and positive for the first week of January!

  7. i don't do resolutions but I do think about what i could do that would make me a happier person / my family happier / etc. when i break down into smaller 'goals' then they seem to happen more than the resolution idea. bcebailey at hotmail dot com

  8. I love resolutions... in theory. I hardly ever follow through on any I make, but I do like spending some time thinking about where I am in life and where I'd like to be -- and then what I need to do to bridge the gap.

  12. I make resolutions, but they are either really broad and kind of useless, or they are pretty tongue in cheek. Definitely never make classic resolutions like losing weight- that is just setting myself up for failure :-). Thanks for all of the great giveaways. I adore your blog and when I manage to work up te nerve to attempt sewing a garment, my maiden voyage will be some big butt baby pants! Email is rachel.cachero@gmail.com

  15. what a fabulous giveaway! nice to read the backstory on charm stitch too and wish laura all the best as she works toward her brick and mortar shop!

as for new years resolutions, i don't bother with them anymore because they don't work for me. i do occassionally come up with a few goals...some practical and some fun to keep it balanced and workable! the only one i've thought up for this year so far is to learn how to *successfully* make ratatouille!

  17. Hmmm... New Years Resolutions have always beeen something I've enjoyed. I usually don't stick to them, but they do motivate me. I do have the occassional year where I do stick by them, like the one 10 years ago in 9th grade when I decided to become a vegetarian. This year, since I'm pregnant, my goal is to walk on the treadmill at the gym for atleast 30 minutes every school day, since I have to walk my daughter to school, and the gym is right next door. :)

  21. We have our New Years Resolution time in September, when we are all going back to school. We buy new notebooks and sharpen our new pencils and make resolutions for the new year. But I do love ringing in the new year at midnight! Thanks for all the great giveaways -- and introducing us to so many incredible fabric vendors! Happy New Year.

  25. Last year, my New Year's Resolution was to get at least one hour of sleep each night. My son had been born all of three days before New Year's, and I made that resolution in a haze of early sleep deprivation and mommy-euphoria (in the dreamy first week, of course). I remember thinking it was HILARIOUS at the time. I don't take resolutions much more seriously than that -- there are some things I want to work on (like having more patience with the puppy) but I don't formalize it into Resolutions.

  27. I'm not making any resolutions per say, but I am thinking about naming my year- ya know giving it one word to live by- more of a vision statement than a resolution.

  30. My family has a tradition of recording everyone's resolutions on New Years Eve and going over last years to see who did and didn't keep them. I like the accountability and I love resolutions!!!

  31. I try to make simple resolutions in each area of my life..this year I'll try to be more patient with my kids, sew from my stash, run more, and file things at work when I'm done working on them (my desk is a big pit!). Easy and fun and always good to strive. I don't beat myself up too badly if I don't make them happen....i just try again the next day. Thanks for the chance to win. Happy New Year!

  32. I don't think resolutions are bad, but they are not for me. I set my eyes on the Lord daily, first thing in the morning, and that helps me keep my focus on those things that are important to accomplish. Of course, I sometimes slip on these too, just as I did when I made New Years resolutions, but then we are all human, eh?!! Great giveaway and great fabric!

  35. Fantastic fabrics. I'd love to make my daughter's birthday quilt with them.

I don't make specific new year's resolutions. This time of year mostly serves to remind me to be patient with my kids and to do what I can to be a good/supportive wife, friend, sister, daughter, etc.

  37. I have a little sick saying that applies to me every year: "If you don't set any goals for yourself, then you won't be disappointed when you don't meet them!" And honestly, nope No New Years Resolutions for me!

    marcijdebetaz (at) hotmail {dotcom}

  38. Resolutions never work for me if I'm too ambitious. For example, I can't resolve to do something useful and intimidating like: 'I resolve to keep my craft room organized'. That's never worked. However - keeping my resolutions lighthearted, small, and fun can actually lead to a change in behaviour. Last year's example of a successful resolution was for me to make my bed almost every day. This year, I'd like to learn to do a handstand.

Now, if only I can figure out a way to actually keep my sewing room from looking like a war zone...

    ReplyDelete
  39. My sister-in-law just told me the best idea that I think I'm going to use for my resolutions. Instead of writing down many, many little things that never happen, she does a "year of health" or a "year of learning." That whole year she focuses on that one thing. It makes it easier to focus and not so overwhelming.

    sunnysummersmile at gmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh, just general ideas on how to improve myself. My attitude. My work ethic. My mothering. But nothing that will make me feel like a failure if I don't "fill in the blank". Fingers crossed on this one! HNY!

    ReplyDelete
  41. OMG BEAUTIFUL fabric!!!! As I know you commiserate I'm a major fabric junkie... major... must get up to speed on my projects to use up all of my little bits of beauty! Most recently I used some of my newest favorites to turn some beautiful hand stitched fabric art I purchased on my honeymoon in Costa Rica into pillows! But alas, I digress... we're talking about resolutions! Okay, I personally don't really believe in resolutions, I believe in goals. However I can't put down ye old New Year's resolutions because that's what works for some people - if it motivates you I say do it! For me I am a constant goal maker, year round, so new years is nothing special. But, as I said, I do totally support it for those of us who it provides a perfect deadline/starting point!

    Happy New Year!!!!

  42. As far as formal New Year's Resolutions, I don't think I ever really follow through. Though actually writing down some realistic goals does help me to focus on them and gives me a better chance of succeeding. So far my only goal for 2011 is to make it to the hospital fast enough so that I don't have my baby in the van, haha! After that if I can parent four children 5 and under without going crazy I'd say my year will be a success. Can't wait :).

  43. I am not big on resolutions, per se, but I am happy for new beginnings. I love to start the year with optimism and hope. I saw Vanessa's idea of a one word theme for the year, and I think that would be a great way to go...if I could find the right word! Thanks bunches for the giveaways and inspiration.

  52. I have always made new years resolution but just like everyone else have trouble following them. Maybe because most of them are things that I never intend to do but which would be better for me to do. Example? Get thinner :) That one's probably number one on the hit list of every woman.
Now, instead I set goals. Which sounds better but is pretty much the same with the advanteage of being more precise. As in: go to ballett twice a week for two hours :) I probably won't get thinner with that goal but it will make me dance better :)

  55. I love New Years Resolutions. I like to start the year positively and with focus. I'm going to try and keep them small this year because I want to make sure I achieve some. 2010 wasn't so great for that!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think New Year's resolutions are silly. If there's something I need to work on, I'm all for setting goals, but waiting until New Year's seems like just setting myself up to fail because it's relying on a cliche.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I like resolutions. Even if I don't stick to them, it's nice to have an idea of what I'd like to accomplish in the year. When I start to get too wrapped up in small, everyday chaos I can step back and look at my resolutions and the bigger picture.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Can't remember i have ever made a new years resoution...I probably have at some point, but..I don't have any myself but think it is a good thing that some do. Like religion...I am no believer but I respect those who do. Think it keeps people on track of their ideals,so they stay passionate.
Happy new year to you and yours

  66. Such darling fabrics and projects! I'm always making, attempting, remaking, and reattempting resolutions throughout the whole year so making them special for New Year's isn't a big deal. I do however love that blank slate feeling that Jan 1st brings - that absolution of starting completely fresh and resetting my remake/reattempt counter for the year ;)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm not making resolutions this year. I second Marjorie's comment there -- I'm constantly resolving and evolving -- but it's hard for me to celebrate the new year because I don't like to reflect on the passage of time. I get too sad.

I enjoyed reading Laura's profile. Good luck to her! (And me: jenny and sullivan and parker at comcast dot net.)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I find that New Year's resolutions are not useful at all, mostly because it's too easy to treat them like Mardi Gras. As in, "My New Year's resolution is to drink less so I'd better booze it up now!"

    Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I stink at New's Year resolutions, so I don't make them anymore. Instead I just try to implement change all year round. Yeeeeaaaaah. Doesn't always go so well. :)

This year I've also made lists that detail how I'm going to give my house an overhaul - cleaning and the like. I'm usually an easy come easy go person but we'd like to sell our house in the spring so I've got to get my act together.

  80. What if my New Year's resolution is to hang out with you and Laura, who evidently have my exact taste in fabric? Sheesh!

Okay, for real: I don't do New Year's resolutions. I make a hippie-dippie vision board and a Mondo Beyondo list (more info here: http://www.superherodesigns.com/journal/archives/000452.html) and call it a day. I prefer to dream than to set myself up for failure, you know?

    ReplyDelete
  81. 2010 was the first time I had really attempted to do the resolution thing, and lets just say that out of four, I only really completed half of one, sort of..... And instead of losing 10 kgs, I gained an extra 10 kgs.... so this year, I'm going with achievable and easy, like accumulate more fabric ;)

    Thanks for the giveaway!!

  94. I think the new year is a good time to reflect and reevaluate. It brings with it a fresh start. I choose one thing per year that I would like to change. It's an uncomplicated starting point and much easier to accomplish.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hmm... resolutions? To survive the year. Worked last year.

Sew more, too. This would help!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I always start the year thinking I will make changes in my life, but usually these changes start off great and end up only becoming a small part of my lifestyle and not the dramatic change I had hoped for. This year, I resolve to craft and sew more, which is one resolution I can keep!

  97. I don't really have resolutions but I do like to reflect on what has been and what's too come at this time of the year. After Christmas I do think about eating more healthily, finding more time to sew (and to finish things before I start something new) and to use up my fabric stash before buying anything more!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I like resolutions! I don't make them every year, but I try to stick to them when I do. A few years ago I quit smoking (cold turkey) on New Years Day and haven't smoked since. This year I have a crazy plan to either make or buy handcrafted gifts for everyone on my list AND be done with Christmas by Thanksgiving. I guess we'll see!

  106. I think New Years resolutions are good if they are reasonable...some people go overboard. And I definitely hate that the gym is so crowded in January, cause I know most of the people will stop going after a month or two! Don't make goals you can't keep! And don't set goals just because it's the New Year, have goals ALL the time!

  114. I think NY resolutions depend on the person. It's an easy time to change diet because it's hard to control your diet during the Thanksgiving to Christmas time frame.
That said, I'm shooting for exercising more and also being better about telling my hubby when he is able to make it home on a weekend that I'm glad he's home and that he's appreciated :)

  115. I think about resolutions, but I seldom actually worry about them, it's more of a what would be fun to work on this year kind of thing. This year, though, is different. I found myself spending time vicariously crafting by reading blog after blog and dreaming of actually making things instead of actually making things. So I chose to start off 2011 with a blog of my own and a determination to make and share more and live less vicariously.

  131. I love making new years resolutions. Although I don't think we need to wait until the new year to strive for greater goals and fresh starts it is a great time to evaluate the previous year and figure out where you want to go in the new year. Writing goals down, makes us more likely to achieve them. I'm a bit of a procrastinator so I don't usually write mine out until a couple weeks into the new year but I do make a list for sure. 168. I don't tend to make New Year's resolutions - I guess I know I'll be disappointed at the inevitable lack of adherence. The closest I probably got was a promise to myself not to buy any yarn until the new year, and I only stuck to that because I made it sometime during the summer and because yarn for gifts didn't count.

That being said, I find myself thinking of things to accomplish in the new year despite not making formal resolutions. That way, I won't be as annoyed with myself if I don't stick to it. But this year I may actually organize my craft room in preparation for lots of sewing for the new baby!

    ReplyDelete
  169. I stopped making new year resolutions a few years ago because I never followed through anyway.
